John's Photography

I often take photos for references for my oil paintings, and I wanted to share a few of my favorites with you. Photography is a hobby of mine, and most of my pictures are nothing special; but every once in a while I get lucky and snap one that really stands out. I'll be adding more photos as I take them. Enjoy!

My photograph below entitled "Rest in Peace" was taken at an old farm that's part of the Nashville Zoo. I chose this subject to illustrate the peacefulness of this resting place, and also to show that life, and seasons, continue without even a pause long after we pass on.

This photo was taken with an inexpensive digital camera, and the unique lighting scenario is what really makes this composition work. I try to photograph many of the same subjects at different times of the day when I utilize natural lighting, much like the impressionist painters would paint the same scenes under several different lighting conditions to study the various color and shadow effects.

These horses are on the Grassmere Farm, which is part of the Nashville Zoo. I spend a lot of time taking photos at this farm because the photo opportunities are endless.
