Original Oil Painting by John Durant

The Fisherman

This painting was inspired by my love for fishing which started when I was very young. My family owned a small farm with three ponds, and I couldn't wait to go fishing when I was done with my chores. My brothers and I also had a favorite fishing spot at Buffalo Creek, which was about three miles from our farm. We'd ride our bikes loaded down with poles, fishing boxes, bait buckets, and snacks to our favorite fishing hole. I remember having our Zebco 202 fishing reels which wouldn't work half the time, so we would just wind fishing line around sticks to use as drop lines. It wasn't high-tech, but we usually came home with plenty of trout, bullhead, crappie, bass, and bluegill for dinner.

This painting means very much to me. It was a gift to my parents when my mother was in hospice for cancer. My mother loved this painting, and requested that we set the painting next to her at her funeral. My father still has the painting, and it is something that will always be very close to my heart. It reminds me of happier times in my childhood, and also of my mother Anna.

I still love to fish, and I have many favorite fishing spots here in Tennessee. I catch a lot of bass, catfish, and bluegill whenever I go, and it's also a really great way for me to relax and clear my mind.
